In 2017, the L.A. Wolves were the longest-surviving UPSL club in the Open Cup, qualifying for the Third Round before falling 1-0 to OC SC of the United Soccer League (USL).

One year earlier, La Maquina FC of Santa Ana (Calif.) made the headlines when it forced the LA Galaxy of Major League Soccer (MLS) to extra time in the Fourth Round before a 4-1 defeat.

Sporting Kansas City (MLS) is the defending U.S. Open Cup Champion.

MLS teams have won the U.S. Open Cup every year since 2000.
